Nanoleaf Rhythm Motion Sensor (Discontinued)Updated 3 years ago

Note that the Nanoleaf Rhythm no longer supports a Motion Sensor. The feature was included on a small subset of units and was run for a short time as a beta feature, although was never released broadly and is no longer being supported.

The feature can no longer be enabled and will cease to work for Light Panels version 3.1.0 or higher.

The below information is included for reference purposes only.

The Nanoleaf Rhythm includes a Motion Sensor that has been released as a beta feature available with the Nanoleaf Light Panels version 2.2.4+ if you are in North America. This feature allows you to configure your Light Panels to react to motion. If you are an iOS user, this also is shown as a HomeKit motion sensor that you can use to trigger other HomeKit Automation.

Note about 5GHz Networks:

Note that this is being released as a beta feature because the motion sensor can interfere with some 5GHz wireless networks. If you enable the motion sensor and experience issues with your 5GHz wireless network, you have two options:

  1. Disable the Motion Sensor
  2. Adjust your Wireless Router to use specific 5GHz channels.

The second option will allow you to use the motion sensor along side your wireless network. We only recommend this option if you are comfortable reconfiguring your router settings. This is normally done through a browser and the instructions will depend on your model. You should reach out to your ISP or router manufacturer if you need more instructions on this.

The motion sensor can interfere with 5.8 GHz networks configured on channels 149, 153, 157, 161, and 165. This is most likely when using 80 MHz bandwidth and is less likely when using 40 or 20 MHz widths. To avoid this, the best option is to adjust your settings to use channels 36-48 (5.1 GHz) although you can also try lowering your channel bandwidth if you want to continue using a 5.8 GHz channel.

Setup:

To enable and use the Motion sensor, you must opt-in from the Beta Features section of the Nanoleaf App. You can find this in the App Settings.

Once opted-in, to configure the Motion Sensor, you can tap the brightness icon from the Dashboard for the Light Panels that have the Nanoleaf Rhythm. This will bring up a configuration page with sensitivity, timeout times, and low brightness settings.

How the Motion Sensor Works:

Sensitivity: this is a 0-100 range for how sensitive the sensor is to movement. 0 is least sensitive. 100 is most sensitive.

Timeout Time: this is the time, in minutes, that the motion sensor will wait before running any automation.

Lower Brightness: when no-motion is detected for your Timeout Time, the Light Panels will reduce their brightness to this. This is set to 0 by default, but you can set it to any value.

When the motion sensor detects motion, it will change to "Motion Detected". Once there is no motion for a period of your Timeout Time, it will change to "No Motion". If you have enabled Light Panel behaviour, they will ramp down to your Lower Brightness. Once motion is detected again, they will ramp back up to the previous brightness you set as a user.

Note that when you enable the motion sensor for the Light Panels, we prioritize manual user interactions. This means that if you manually change the brightness, automation will not take over until after a period of no-motion for your Timeout Time. Automation will also only ramp down if your Lower Brightness is lower than the current setting. This means that if you turn your Light Panels off manually, they will not turn back on until you manually turn them on. They will only ramp back up with motion if they first ramp down because of no-motion.
