Why Does the Nanoleaf App Need Location Permission on iOS?Updated a month ago

At Nanoleaf, your privacy is our top priority. We understand that granting location permission might raise questions, so here’s a clear explanation of why this access is necessary:

Apple's Requirement for Accessing Network Information

  • Apple’s Policy: Apple requires apps to request location permission when accessing network details such as your Wi-Fi SSID (the name of your network). This is because, by Apple’s definition, Wi-Fi SSIDs can potentially be used to determine a device’s physical location.

  • Technical Necessity: During the process of adding Nanoleaf devices to your network, the app needs to read your current network’s SSID to ensure it connects the devices to the correct network. Once connected, communication with your Nanoleaf devices happens over Wi-Fi, and no further location data is needed.

How the Nanoleaf App Uses Location Data

  • Device Setup: The Nanoleaf app accesses location information only when you are adding a new device to your network. This step is required solely to retrieve the network’s SSID.

  • Integration with Apple Home: If you use Apple Home, location services are required to enable seamless integration with your smart home setup. Apple Home leverages this data to provide context-aware functionality, ensuring that your devices work together efficiently. More information

Nanoleaf does not track, store, or use your geographical location information. The location permission is used only for the brief setup process and nothing more.

If you have any further questions or concerns about how we handle your data, please feel free to contact our support team. Your trust is important to us, and we’re here to ensure your experience with Nanoleaf is both enjoyable and secure.
